MANSFIELD -- Jacob Goede didn't pull a
David Starr or a Jeff Agnew.
Unlike those racers, Goede finished what he started on the last lap
and held on to win Saturday night's API/PPG Industries All-American
Classic 200 at Mansfield Motorsports Park.

The 23-year-old from Minnesota survived a green-white-checker
finish under the lights after leading 115 laps in the ASA Late Model
Series Challenge Division race. A last-lap yellow fell for a spinning
car in Turn 4. That set up a shootout finish, which is always a dicey
proposition.

"I couldn't believe it. When the white flag came out, we were doing
everything in our power to finish it," he said. "Then they threw the
caution, and I didn't see a reason for one."
He regrouped inside his No. 72 Chevrolet as the field was reset.

"I figured we were good on all the restarts and we'd be OK. I just had
to hit everything two more times and we were fine," Goede said.

In two other races at MMP this year, the leader at the white flag
wasn't the first to see the checkers.

During the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Ohio 250, Donny Lia
bumped Starr out of the lead to set up a dramatic three-wide ending
at the stripe. In the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series Northern Division
Greased Lightning 250, Agnew ran out of gas and was passed by
an unsuspecting Derek Kale a quarter-mile from the finish.

Robbie Pyle, a top short track stock car specialist from Columbus,
couldn't pull off a Lia or Kale.

"If I would have had something, he would have saw it. I couldn't even
stay with him at the end," Pyle said.

Pyle's No. 21 Ford hounded Goede for much of the second-half of
the 200-lap race. With 15 laps to go, he was right under the leader's
back bumper.

"I was hoping to wear him down out there, but he did a great job and
held his line," Pyle said. "He was pretty fast. I was hoping at the end
of the race we would have a little more tire than he did, but he did a
real good job of taking care of everything."

On the final restart, Pyle said his tires' pressure was too low to make
a real run. Goede checked out on the final two laps to take the win.

"He was in my mirrors and he was kind of bothering me a little bit,"
Goede said of the pressure Pyle put on him in the last 100 laps. "I
tried not to let it faze me, and I concentrated on what I was doing."

Travis Dassow, of Wisconsin, led the first 83 laps. Meanwhile,
Goede sat fourth, then third, for much of the first half of the race. On
lap 73, he got around points leader Peter Cozzolino for second
place, coming out of the second turn when Cozzolino got loose in his
No. 11 Ford on the previous lap.

Ten laps later, Goede did the same to Dassow in turns 3 and 4 to
take the lead for good.

"I just capitalized on it," Goede said of the passes. "The track is fun
to race on, but it's super tough to pass, especially with these crate
motor cars. They just don't have the power to get out of the corner.

"Once they made a mistake, I could get in there and make it happen
and make it stick."

It was the third win of his ASA Late Model Challenge career. Goede
came into the race ranked second in the points.

“I’m so happy to get this first one under our belts in 2008!” The new ASALMS
Challenge Division Points Leader continued. “This is the toughest field of cars
anywhere in the country. I thoroughly enjoy racing in the ASA Late Model Series! As
long as we keep winning or at least finishing up front, the points will come.”

Pyle, who started 13th, earned the Performance Concepts Hard-Charger Award
with his runner-up showing. “I gave him all I had, but he had that inside lane
working really well.” Pyle explained during his post-race interview. “I wasn’t going
to turn him or anything and if I couldn’t pass him clean, we were taking a second
place finish tonight and that’s what happened.”

“I’ve got to thank Howe Racing Enterprises and all my guys for giving me a great
car this weekend. We couldn’t come up with any more changes during Practice so
we parked the car and then it rained!” Pyle continued. “But that didn’t seem to hurt
the car at all and we were able to run the same lines we’ve ran all weekend. Jacob
did a good job and deserves the win.”

Indianapolis, Indiana veteran, Peter Cozzolino scored his fourth podium finish in
four starts with a strong third place showing, but lost the points lead in the process
and now trails Goede by just Six (6) points unofficially heading into the next event at
Salem Speedway.

“This is incredible to finish on the podium in every race this year so far!” Relayed
the 39-year-old. “Every single point is critical with Jacob and I doing so well. It’s
going to come down to the last race and no one can make a mistake at any time.”

The next race on the ASALMS Challenge Division schedule is at a track where
Cozzolino has turned thousands of laps, the Salem Speedway. “I can’t wait to get
down to Salem. We’ve got a lot of experience there and that race is going to be
pivotal to say the least in the outcome of this championship!” Cozzolino predicted
.

Stump got off to a slow start once the green flag flew and Dassow shot out into
the lead bringing the outside line of cars with him. Dassow set a torrid pace in
the beginning stages of the 200-lap affair as Three-Time Feature Winner in
2008, Sean Murphy tried to keep pace with the defending champion.

A big pile-up on Lap 32 took out some cars as Medina, Ohio veteran, Jack Smith
spun coming down the front stretch as 16-year-old Blake Brown and 18-year-old
Canadian, Jordan Sims had nowhere to go and tagged the front stretch wall.
Both were done for the night although Brown did try and turn a few laps, but he
too eventually called it a night.

15-year-old Gene Kirila in his first career ASALMS Challenge Division
appearance was also involved and spent several laps in the pits making repairs.
Finally, Griffin McGrath also suffered damage but after several pit stops, was
able to continue.

On the restart, Murphy began pressing Dassow for the lead as the two stout
pilots battled all around the ½ mile progressively banked paved oval. On Lap 52
as Murphy again made a run at Dassow, he got sideway coming out of Turn Two
and lazily spun bringing out the caution flag.

On the restart, Dassow now had to deal with a hard-charging Jacob Goede who
was all over Dassow’s back bumper. Goede looked high and low searching for a
line around the defending champion and found it on Lap 84 as he grabbed the
lead away from the West Bend, Wisconsin driver.

Goede would lead the field into the Lap 100 ½ way break as Dassow, Robbie
Pyle from 13th, Jimmy Lang from 11th, and Peter Cozzolino were the Top Five.

At the start of the second half, Pyle quickly began working on Dassow and got by
and set his sights on Goede for the top spot! For the remainder of the race, Pyle
was glued to Goede’s back bumper searching for a way around him and waiting
for any little mistake.

On Lap 132, Dassow was fighting off 19-year-old Jimmy Lang for third and as
they came out of Turn Four, Lang, the ASALMS Southern Division Points Leader,
got into the back of Dassow sending him into the Turn Four wall hard! Dassow
was ok, but done for the evening and Lang was sent to the rear of the field for
rough driving.

This moved Cozzolino into the third spot on the restart, but Goede and Pyle
would pull away from him and the rest of the field to continue their battle. Pyle
tried time and time again to pull to the inside but Goede would not budge from
the lower line!

Several cautions toward the latter stages of the Feature slowed Pyle’s
momentum down and on each restart, Goede would pull out ever so slightly
ahead of Pyle as it would take the Columbus, Ohio veteran a couple of laps to
get back going.

One final caution flew as the white flag came out when Brian Campbell, who was
fourth, and Sean Murphy, who came back from the rear of the field after his Lap
52 spin, collided and spun in Turn Four. Both were sent to the rear of the field as
the final caution set up a Green-White-Checkered finish!

On that final restart however, Goede inched ahead of Pyle who did muster up
one final charge at the Minnesota pilot. Goede held the inside line, forcing Pyle to
the outside and as Pyle threw every trick he had in his arsenal at Goede’s
Laketown Electric Chevrolet, but came up just short!

Goede withstood the advances of Pyle one last time to score his third career
ASALMS Challenge Division Feature Win and in doing so, took over the 2008
ASALMS Challenge Division Points Lead heading into the next event in Salem,
Indiana
By Matt Prieur-ASA Late Model Series
Mansfield, Ohio (Saturday, June 28, 2008): Jacob Goede knows what it’s like too
win the big races on the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division Presented by
GM Performance Parts Schedule.

The New Germany, Minnesota driver won two of the biggest races of the 2007
season when he won at Iowa Speedway and then won the biggest race of his
career in the Crate American Race 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

So coming to new tracks and doing well is nothing new for the 23-year-old
Minnesota native and after the first Friday Practice Session at Mansfield
Motorsports Park in Mansfield, Ohio Goede knew he’d have something for the rest
of the field in the API / PPG Industries All-American Classic 200.

The fourth points race of the season and the halfway point of the 2008 campaign
for “America’s Premiere Short Track Series” saw Goede do what few people in the
state of Ohio have been able to do over the years, hold back a hard-charging
Robbie Pyle, a Columbus, Ohio native, too win a big Feature!

“I knew he was back there and I gave him the outside! If he was going to pass me,
that’s where it was going to have to happen. The car was so good on the inside so
I wasn’t giving him that line!” Explained Goede in victory lane after winning his first
ASALMS Challenge Division Feature of the 2008 racing season and third of his
career!

With Showers and Thunderstorms putting a halt to racing activities during the
afternoon at the immaculate speed plant located Northwest of Columbus and
Southeast of Cleveland in the middle of the Buckeye State, ARP Bodies /
Aluminum Racing Products Qualifying was cancelled and the line-up would be
determined by the 2008 Owners Points!

ASALMS Challenge Division Points Leader, Peter Cozzolino then drew the
minimum of a six (6) for an inversion which placed Tipp City, Ohio veteran, Kris
Stump and Defending ASALMS Challenge Division Champion, Travis Dassow on
the front row for the API / PPG Industries All-American Classic 200.
. “I wasn’t going to turn him or anything and if I couldn’t pass him clean, we were taking a second place finish tonight and
that’s what happened.” "Jacob did a good job and deserves the win.”
