SAUK CENTRE, MN (July 7, 2007) - Jacob Goede became the seventh
different winner in seven races as he put on a show and used lapped
traffic to get by Dan Fredrickson to win the American Speed Association
Kwik Trip Midwest Tour, Presented By Echo Outdoor Power Equipment’s
July Spectacular 100 at the I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre, MN.
Jamie Iverson took the lead from the start, quickly extending the margin
to nearly a straightaway over pole sitter Brian Johnson Jr.. Fredrickson
was the driver on the move in the early stages of the race, as he got past
Dave Feiler and began his assault towards the front. Fredrickson reeled in
Iverson, taking the lead with a pass coming out of turn four on lap 36.
Once in front, Fredrickson then began to pull away as Goede, the Echo
Outdoor Power Equipment Fast Qualifier, was slowly picking off cars from
his eleventh starting spot as he moved towards the front. As the race ran
caution-free, several drivers lost a lap as Fredrickson and Goede set a
fast pace at the head of the field. Lapped traffic allowed Fredrickson to
hold off Goede as he feverously tried to take the lead. On lap 82, the
cars of Doug Mahlik and Jonathan Eilen set a pick for Goede, who out-
maneuvered Fredrickson to take the lead. One lap later, Russ Blakley
brought out the lone caution of the race, when he spun out of turn four.
Goede nailed the restart perfectly as he tried to distance himself from
Fredrickson. Lapped traffic kept things close right up until the end, as
Goede hung on to take the checkered flag by .777 seconds over
Fredrickson. "It was pretty cool to pass Fredrickson for win, I don’t recall
ever passing him before," said Goede following the race. "I had a little
bit of help with the lapped cars, but he had some help with lapped cars
holding me back a few times too. It kind of evened out and it was real
cool to get around him for the win."
Fredrickson, winner of the most recent ASA Midwest Tour race at
Lacrosse Fairgrounds Speedway earlier in the week, capped things off
with a strong second-place finish. "I didn’t think the race would go
caution-free like that, but I was fine with it," said Fredrickson in the pits
following the race. "I had a little better car, I thought I had enough lead
on Goede to stay out there, other than the lapped cars holding me up. I’
m a little frustrated with them, real happy with my car and Jacob’s a
good guy and I’m real happy to see him win."
One of the most impressive runs was by visiting driver and third-place
finisher from the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Ron Hornaday Jr. who
was making his second American Speed Association Midwest Tour start
in a week. "I came out here and ran as hard as I had to do," said
Hornaday in the post-race tech area. "The American Speed Association
is doing a great job and I’m glad to come out here and support all the
guys and see all the great fans out here. I-94 Raceway is a lot of fun."
Hornaday a driver who kicked off his racing career running short tracks
out west was pleased to get a chance to run with and run third with the
American Speed Association Midwest Tour. "It’s an honor a pleasure to
run with these guys and it’s a fun deal."
