Downey brought the crowd to their feet by taking the early lead at his home track with Derek
Thorn in his racinforacure.com Ford in hot pursuit. On Lap Five, Thorn would take over the
top spot from Downey and brought two-time Feature Winner in 2007, Jacob Goede with him.
A lap later, Griffin McGrath slammed the Turn Two wall to bring out the first of nine cautions
of the evening. On the restart, Thorn led a parade of accomplished pilots around the 0.686
mile progressively banked paved oval. Goede followed Thorn around the Clermont, Indiana
speed plant for the majority of the first half of the 200-lap feature.

Jacob Goede came home in second place and was pleased with coming home second. “We
worked hard tonight to get where we ended up. I knew Sean was behind me and this is his
house tonight. We knew he was going to be tough.” The 23-year-old Minnesotian said.
“This is a great way to start the 2008 season in this Challenge Division. These are the toughest
and most competitive drivers around. We’re going after this ASALMS Challenge Division title
and we go to Iowa Speedway next and I can’t wait!” Goede, the defending race winner in
Newton, Iowa added.
The battle up front continued with Goede trying to maneuver around Thorn and each time,
Thorn kept the New Germany, Minnesota driver at bay. At one point, the Top 11 cars were
nose to tail with positions constantly changing amongst those Top 11 cars!
Finally on Lap 87, Goede made his move and was finally able to get by Thorn and take over
the lead. Goede also brought Sean Murphy with him, pushing Thorn back to third and into
the clutches of Brian Campbell and Robbie Pyle, fourth and fifth place.
Goede would lead the field into the Lap 100 10-minute break for two (2) Hoosier Racing Tires
and a replenished fuel cell full of Torco Racing Fuel! Murphy was second as Thorn,
Campbell, and Pyle were the Top Five.
On the restart to begin the second half, Goede jumped out to a big lead as heavy action and
jockeying for position was abound behind him. Two more quick cautions for harmless spins
bunched up the field.
On the Lap 128 restart, Murphy wasn’t letting Goede get too far out in front and anchored
himself to Goede’s back bumper while trying to figure out a good line around the Minnesota
invader.
