“I just love coming here, we always seem to be pretty quick and we’ve
always had good luck.” Hoffman said in victory lane. “That was a bad deal
with Brian (Campbell) and the lapped car. Then once we got the lead, I
knew the 72 car (Jacob Goede) was behind me and I was a little worried
about him! He’s so strong whenever he shows up, but we pulled it off.” He
added.
2007 Big 8 Late Model Series Champion, Jeremy Miller and Three-Time
ASALMS Northern Division Feature Winner in 2007, Brian Campbell led the
34-car starting line-up, one of the strongest fields in ASALMS history, to
Chief Starter, Tom Powell’s green flag to begin the door closer in the
ASALMS for the 2007 season.
Miller edged out Campbell heading into Turn One to take the early lead
while the rest of the strong field jockeyed for position. The first of nine
cautions flew on Lap 10 when Ryan Carlson spun in turn three and
collected 18-year-old Alec Carll, who earlier in the day clinched the 2007
ASALMS Challenge Division GM Performance Parts Shootout
Championship by winning the Odd GMPP Shootout.
Even GMPP Shootout Winner, Chris Eggleston and Wes Griffith Jr., were
also involved and only Eggleston was able to continue. On the restart, Miller
jumped out to a sizable lead and that was negated by another caution on
Lap 19 when Terry VanHaitsma and Peter Cozzolino collided in Turns 3-4.
As the green flag flew again, Miller wasn’t able to build up as big of a lead
as he did previously as Campbell and a strong contingent of drivers trailed
the Rockford, Illinois driver. At one point the Top Seven cars in line had
accumulated 19 ASALMS Feature Wins during the 2007 season!
On Lap 64, ARP Bodies / Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier, Derek
Thorn and 19-year-old Travis Cope got together coming down the front
stretch resulting in Thorn’s night ending early. Cope pitted several times
under caution but would rejoin the field at the back of the pack.
All the while, Miller continued to pace the field as Eddie Hoffman slowly
began his charge to the front and found himself in fourth position behind
Campbell and 2007 ASALMS Challenge Division Champion, Travis Dassow.
All of a sudden on Lap 79 as Miller made his way into Turn Three, his Right
Front Wheel broke sending Miller’s Race Team Gear.com/Pathfinder
Chassis/Ford Fusion hard into the Turn Four wall! He was shaken but
otherwise ok and done for the evening.
This gave the lead to Campbell who now had Hoffman, Dassow, Four-Time
ASALMS Southern Division Feature Winner in 2007, Beau Slocumb and
Jacob Goede all on his back bumper. On Lap 94, a pair of 18-year-olds’
David Wilson and Brent Seeley collided and both slid up into the Turn One
wall, Travis Cope had nowhere to go and slid up into both drivers. All three
were ok but all were done for the night.
That caution brought the field to the Lap 100 10-Minute break with Campbell
leading Hoffman, Dassow, Goede, and Slocumb the Top Five as the teams
came down pit road for Four (4) Hoosier Racing Tires, a fuel cell full of
Torco Racing Fuel, and any other adjustments in the time allowed before
the second half of the 200-lap Feature.
During the break, another multi-time ASALMS Feature Winner in 2007,
Robbie Pyle, who recorded two ASALMS Challenge and one ASALMS
Northern Division Feature during the year stopped in Turn Two and had to
be pushed onto pit road. A faulty Distributor ended the Columbus, Ohio
veterans’ night!
As the field came down for the green to begin the second half of the Adam
Petty Memorial / All-American 200, Campbell and Hoffman pulled away from
the rest of the pack as Dassow fell back almost immediately as both Goede
and Slocumb got by the 2007 ASALMS Challenge Division Champion.
In almost an exact similar incident to Jeremy Miller’s crash on Lap 79,
Slocumb drove into Turn One when his car suddenly turned right and the
Macon, Georgia driver slammed the Turns 1-2 hard! He was also ok, but his
car was done for the night.
By this time, Goede had worked his way up to third behind Campbell and
Hoffman and the trio pulled away from the rest of the pack. Hoffman looked
high and low trying to figure out a way around Campbell while Goede stayed
close to Hoffman. All three diced their way through lapped traffic when on
Lap 149, lapped cars played a significant role in the outcome of the race.
As Campbell was trying to put 16-year-old Dakota Stroup a lap down, Stroup
slowed coming out of Turn Four forcing Campbell to check up, when he did
Hoffman and Goede drove around both Campbell and Stroup as Campbell
hit the apron of the track and spun bringing out the caution flag.
This gave the lead to Hoffman and moved Goede up to second spot. The
duo then pulled away from the rest of the field. In the meantime, 18-year-old
Keeton Hanks, who started 16th had worked his way into the Top Five and
later on, got up to third position with 25 laps to go and began reeling in the
leaders as the laps clicked off.
Hoffman meanwhile was doing all he could to fight off the stiff challenges
coming from Goede while Hanks continued to draw closer to the two stout
competitors. As the 10 lap to go signal was given, the handling on Hanks’
machine went away allowing Hoffman and Goede to decide the race
amongst each other.
The Wheaton, Illinois veteran is no stranger to victory lane in Music City and
he proved that once again as Hoffman would eventually pull away from
Goede as the white flag came out and was never seriously challenged in
that last lap to bring home the Feature Win in the Adam Petty Memorial / All-
American 200.
“This is a great way to end the season no question about it.” Continued
Hoffman as his T.K. Racing Team helped him celebrate on the famed Music
City Motorplex stage. “We’ve had a really good year, I have to thank Ron and
Sandy Varney and everyone with the ASA Late Model Series for giving us a
great series to race in. I’ve really enjoyed myself and the whole team has as
well. We’ll be back next season and see if we can win one of these
championships.” He ended.
Goede, who posted victories this season at the Iowa (IA) Speedway in the
Make-A-Wish 150 on May 19, 2007 as well as the biggest win of his career
at the Bristol (TN) Motor Speedway in the Crate American Race 200 on
August 4, 2007 came home second.
“I have no problem finishing second again to Eddie Hoffman, he is a great
driver and I’m just so happy that we’re able to run with him and race with
him like that.” Stated Goede who also finished second to Hoffman in the
2007 ASALMS Northern Division Season Championships / Oktoberfest 100
at the LaCrosse (WI) Fairgrounds Speedway on October 6, 2007.
“Eddie is one of the best there is in these cars and we did all we could to
get by him, but I just didn’t have enough.” Continued the New Germany,
Minnesota driver. “I’m hoping we can run the full schedules in either the
Challenge or Northern Division in 2008, we just need the sponsorship to do
the whole deal. Maybe after the success we’ve had this season, someone
is watching!” The hopeful 22-year-old ended.
